Your Guide to Registration, Resources, and Preparation
If you prepare Maryland tax returns for compensation, you must be registered with the Maryland Board of Individual Tax Preparers and pass the Maryland Individual Tax Preparer Examination, administered by PSI Examination Services.
This exam ensures that preparers have a working knowledge of both Maryland and federal individual income tax law and can competently assist taxpayers across the state.

The Maryland Tax Preparer Exam is an open-book test that covers essential federal and state tax topics. Questions are based primarily on the following materials:
- Maryland Board of Individual Tax Preparers Examination Bulletin
- Maryland Form 502 Instruction Booklet
- Federal Form 1040 Instruction Booklet
- Publication 3144: Tips on Tips – A Guide to Tip Income Reporting for Employers
- Publication 523: Selling Your Home
- Publication 974: Premium Tax Credit (PTC)
- Topic No. 452: Alimony and Separate Maintenance
The passing score is 70%.
